Sin embargo, el <strong>di\u00f3xido de carbono (CO\u2082)<\/strong>, esencial para la fotos\u00edntesis, tambi\u00e9n desempe\u00f1a un papel fundamental. La concentraci\u00f3n de este gas en la atm\u00f3sfera ser\u00e1 determinante para el futuro de la vegetaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>El ciclo del carbono y su papel en el clima<\/strong><br>El CO\u2082 es retirado de la atm\u00f3sfera mediante la <strong>meteorizaci\u00f3n de silicatos<\/strong>, un proceso natural en el que las rocas, el agua de lluvia y el di\u00f3xido de carbono forman compuestos que se depositan en el fondo de los oc\u00e9anos como carbonato de calcio. Este carbono regresa a la atm\u00f3sfera millones de a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s gracias a las erupciones volc\u00e1nicas, completando un ciclo que regula el clima. Actualmente, la meteorizaci\u00f3n elimina unos <strong>130 millones de toneladas de carbono al a\u00f1o<\/strong>, pero las emisiones humanas superan esta cifra en <strong>90 veces<\/strong>, alterando temporalmente el equilibrio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Simulaciones clim\u00e1ticas que cambian la perspectiva<\/strong><br>Utilizando un <strong>modelo clim\u00e1tico tridimensional<\/strong>, los investigadores <strong>Jacob Haqq-Misra y Eric Wolf<\/strong> evaluaron c\u00f3mo evolucionar\u00e1 este proceso en escalas de tiempo extremadamente largas. El estudio analiz\u00f3 distintos escenarios seg\u00fan la intensidad de la meteorizaci\u00f3n y la respuesta de los tres grandes grupos de plantas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Plantas C3<\/strong> (95% de las especies): Requieren al menos <strong>50 ppm de CO\u2082<\/strong> para sobrevivir.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plantas C4<\/strong> (3% de las especies): Resisten hasta <strong>10 ppm de CO\u2082<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plantas CAM<\/strong> (2% de las especies): Soportan concentraciones a\u00fan m\u00e1s bajas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Escenarios futuros para la Tierra<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Meteorizaci\u00f3n d\u00e9bil<\/strong>: Si la meteorizaci\u00f3n es baja, el aumento del brillo solar y la temperatura terrestre permitir\u00edan que la vegetaci\u00f3n persista durante <strong>1.500 millones de a\u00f1os<\/strong>, antes de que el calentamiento intenso elimine las regiones habitables.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Meteorizaci\u00f3n intensa<\/strong>: Si la meteorizaci\u00f3n se acelera, el CO\u2082 atmosf\u00e9rico se reducir\u00eda m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido, debilitando el efecto invernadero y enfriando la superficie.
