Ante m\u00e1s de <strong>8,300 expertos<\/strong> de todo el globo, Acosta present\u00f3 <strong>evidencia cient\u00edfica generada en Am\u00e9rica Latina<\/strong>, demostrando que la investigaci\u00f3n sobre el Alzheimer <strong>no puede ignorar las realidades de las regiones en desarrollo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Su ponencia, <em>\u00abUnderstanding Dementia in Latin America: New Insights from the 10\/66 Studies\u00bb<\/em>, expuso los resultados del <strong>proyecto 10\/66<\/strong>, una iniciativa global que busca corregir una <strong>desigualdad hist\u00f3rica<\/strong>: aunque el <strong>66% de las personas con demencia vive en pa\u00edses de ingresos bajos y medios<\/strong>, solo el <strong>10% de los estudios sobre esta enfermedad<\/strong> se hab\u00edan enfocado en estas poblaciones antes de este proyecto. Los datos recabados en <strong>Am\u00e9rica Latina, \u00c1frica y Asia<\/strong> han revelado que <strong>factores como el bajo nivel educativo, la hipertensi\u00f3n no controlada, la diabetes y el aislamiento social<\/strong> aumentan significativamente el riesgo de demencia en estas regiones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En <strong>Rep\u00fablica Dominicana<\/strong>, donde Acosta ha liderado la investigaci\u00f3n, sus hallazgos han permitido estimar <strong>tasas de prevalencia de demencia comparables<\/strong> a las del resto de Am\u00e9rica Latina. Seg\u00fan <strong>Alzheimer\u2019s Disease International<\/strong>, la regi\u00f3n alberga alrededor de <strong>4 millones de personas con demencia<\/strong>, cifra que <strong>podr\u00eda triplicarse para 2050<\/strong> si no se implementan pol\u00edticas de prevenci\u00f3n. Sin embargo, el pa\u00eds a\u00fan <strong>carece de un registro nacional de demencia<\/strong> y de <strong>protocolos de detecci\u00f3n temprana<\/strong>, lo que dificulta una respuesta efectiva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Este logro no solo <strong>resalta el trabajo de la doctora Acosta<\/strong>, sino que tambi\u00e9n <strong>subraya la importancia de la UNPHU<\/strong> en la producci\u00f3n de conocimiento cient\u00edfico de impacto global. En un contexto donde <strong>Rep\u00fablica Dominicana invierte menos del 0.1% de su PIB en investigaci\u00f3n y desarrollo<\/strong> (seg\u00fan el Banco Mundial), el reconocimiento de Acosta en el <strong>AAIC 2026<\/strong> es un <strong>ejemplo de c\u00f3mo el talento local puede trascender fronteras<\/strong> y un <strong>llamado a aumentar el financiamiento para la ciencia en el pa\u00eds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/romanticany.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/daisy-acosta-diario-libre-06a47ee6-focus-0.48-0.48-640-360.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-113114\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adem\u00e1s de su conferencia plenaria, Acosta particip\u00f3 en un <strong>di\u00e1logo con la doctora Suzanne Schindler<\/strong>, de la <strong>Washington University School of Medicine<\/strong>, para discutir los <strong>desaf\u00edos regionales<\/strong> en la prevenci\u00f3n y atenci\u00f3n de la demencia.
