Seg\u00fan los <strong>CDC<\/strong>, el contagio se produce al <strong>tocar al animal, su agua, heces o cualquier objeto de su entorno<\/strong> y luego llevar las manos a la boca o manipular alimentos sin lavarse correctamente. Este riesgo <strong>no desaparece<\/strong> mientras la tortuga est\u00e9 en el hogar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Los s\u00edntomas de la infecci\u00f3n, como <strong>diarrea, fiebre, v\u00f3mitos y c\u00f3licos abdominales<\/strong>, suelen manifestarse entre <strong>6 horas y 6 d\u00edas<\/strong> despu\u00e9s de la exposici\u00f3n. Aunque no todas las personas que conviven con tortugas enfermar\u00e1n, las <strong>autoridades sanitarias<\/strong> insisten en que la <strong>higiene rigurosa<\/strong> y el <strong>aislamiento del h\u00e1bitat<\/strong> son esenciales para reducir el riesgo, aunque <strong>no lo eliminan por completo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En <strong>2024<\/strong>, los CDC investigaron un <strong>brote de <em>Salmonella<\/em><\/strong> vinculado a <strong>tortugas peque\u00f1as<\/strong> (con caparaz\u00f3n menor a 10,2 cm) que afect\u00f3 a <strong>51 personas en 21 estados<\/strong>. Casi la mitad de los casos <strong>requirieron hospitalizaci\u00f3n<\/strong>, y el <strong>40% de los enfermos eran ni\u00f1os menores de 5 a\u00f1os<\/strong>, incluyendo <strong>10 beb\u00e9s de menos de un a\u00f1o<\/strong>. Este brote demostr\u00f3 que el <strong>contacto con tortugas, incluso en acuarios limpios<\/strong>, puede ser peligroso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La <strong>FDA<\/strong> proh\u00edbe desde <strong>1975<\/strong> la venta de tortugas peque\u00f1as como mascotas debido a su relaci\u00f3n con <strong>casos de salmonelosis infantil<\/strong>. Sin embargo, estos animales a\u00fan se venden de forma <strong>ilegal en l\u00ednea, ferias o tiendas no reguladas<\/strong>. La agencia advierte que <strong>el tama\u00f1o no define la presencia de la bacteria<\/strong>: las tortugas grandes tambi\u00e9n pueden ser portadoras de <em>Salmonella<\/em> <strong>sin mostrar s\u00edntomas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un caso extremo fue el de un <strong>beb\u00e9 de 4 semanas en Florida<\/strong> que <strong>muri\u00f3<\/strong> tras infectarse con <em>Salmonella<\/em> por el contacto con una tortuga en su hogar. Los an\u00e1lisis confirmaron que la <strong>bacteria del ni\u00f1o era la misma que la del animal<\/strong>.
