Este hallazgo se produce m\u00e1s de un siglo despu\u00e9s del \u00faltimo descubrimiento de un puercoesp\u00edn con localidad tipo en el pa\u00eds, seg\u00fan el Instituto Humboldt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El estudio comenz\u00f3 en 2018 cuando un grupo de cient\u00edficos, incluyendo a H\u00e9ctor Ram\u00edrez-Ch\u00e1vez de la Universidad de Caldas y Elkin Noguera del Instituto Humboldt, analizaban la especie &#8216;Coendou quichua&#8217;, que se pensaba ampliamente distribuida en Ecuador, Panam\u00e1 y Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante sus investigaciones, los cient\u00edficos detectaron diferencias entre esta especie y algunas poblaciones de puercoespines en el bosque seco del Caribe y el valle interandino del r\u00edo Magdalena en Colombia. Esto los motiv\u00f3 a examinar espec\u00edmenes de &#8216;Coendou quichua&#8217; en museos de EE.UU., Reino Unido, Suecia y otras instituciones colombianas, realizando pruebas de ADN y an\u00e1lisis morfol\u00f3gicos y biogeogr\u00e1ficos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los an\u00e1lisis indicaron que los espec\u00edmenes colombianos difer\u00edan del &#8216;Coendou quichua&#8217;, cuya localidad t\u00edpica est\u00e1 en los Andes ecuatorianos. Adem\u00e1s, al comparar con especies hermanas registradas en Brasil, Per\u00fa y Panam\u00e1, los investigadores concluyeron que esta nueva especie es end\u00e9mica de Colombia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El &#8216;Coendou vossi&#8217; es m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o que sus parientes, pero tiene una cola m\u00e1s larga.
